Matt and Samantha Denton win ‘wife carrying championships’ 2008 event will include more events to appeal to wider participation Written by Ed Culhane for The Lakeland Times – September 28, 2007.
They came from across the state to vie in the 2007 Wisconsin Wife-Carrying Championships help at Torpy Park in Minocqua last Saturday, Sept. 22. But it was Matt and Samantha Denton of Lake Geneva who prevailed as the event’s first grand champions. Battling their way through water obstacles, across sand and grass, over log hurdles, and up steep terrain, six brave couples competed for the “wife’s” weight in a variety of prizes sponsored by area businesses. As much fun for onlookers, a burgeoning crowd of spectators lined up the course to cheer the teams on with shouts, clapping, and cowbells. Teams ran the 278-yard course in heats, two couples at a time. First and second place contenders were then required, by international rules, to compete in a championship round. Though teams tried a couple of different wife-carrying styles, the Estonian method of carry proved to be the most successful. The awards ceremony tool place around a specially designed teeter-totter, with the winning “wife” sitting on one end as the prize product was being loaded on the opposite end. Mike Tercha and Melissa Treu of Wausau won her weight in fresh cranberries from Alder Lake Cranberry Gift Store. Bill and Robin Peshel of Woodruff won her weight in Dasani Water from the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Chad Bartham and Jenni Meierotto of Hazelhurst won her weight in Johnsonville Brats. And the grand champions, Matt and Samantha Denton of Lake Geneva, won her weight in Red Hook Ale from Oneida Sales and Service, as well as five times her weight in cash equaling $545. Next year’s 2008 championships have been expanded and will include a less-intimidating, alternate event for adults of all ages and sizes called “Wife Ferrying.” A Pike-Carrying competition designed for children and teens is also on the docket. A fundraiser for Minocqua Winter Park’s community ski programs, the 2007 Wisconsin Wife Carrying Championships were co-sponsored by the Lakeland Ski Touring Foundation, the Lakeland Kiwanis Club, and the Minocqua-Arbor Vitae-Woodruff Area Chamber of Commerce. Other sponsors who helped to make this year’s event a success are Ace Hardware, Design Solutions, AmericInn of Minocqua, UBC Lumber, Coffen Construction Inc., Golden Eagle log homes, Jelinski Plumbing and heating, USBank, and Fashingbauer Carpentry.
