That may be related, but I am not sure how or why those are being displayed. Nothing works. They do not need write permissions, but they do need read/execute permissions. I can boot into XP and Ubuntu, but the GUI does not load in Ubuntu. Thanks for your help. I found out that these should be stored in the /.local/share directory, but I cannot see the file. no worries. To prevent the default MOTD from reverting, remove the execute bit from the /etc/update-motd.d/00-header file and put your desired MOTD text into /etc/motd.tail.
